Spring in Second Grade
Happy Spring!! The warm weather is here and flowers are blooming. As we enter the last quarter of Second Grade, we have been discussing how we are “Blooming into Third Graders”. This means that we are working on being even more responsible and independent. These are important traits to show in school as well as at home. Please help your child prepare for third grade by being sure they read books every night to build reading stamina, complete their homework for the week, and come to school ready to learn every day.

This month in Second Grade we are working on the following concepts:

Reading: We are focusing on non-fiction text and the text features we see when reading non-fiction books. We are learning about Table of Contents, headings, captions, diagrams, Index, and Glossary and comparing the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts.

Writing: We are writing our own non-fiction book reports in class and discussing the difference between fact and opinion. We are also writing “How-To” books to work on sequence and details in our non-fiction writing. Next month after our non-fiction celebration, we will begin a poetry unit.

Math: We are working on two-digit addition and subtraction with a focus on tens and ones. We are practicing counting money past $1.00 and telling time to the quarter hour. Our favorite game to play right now is “Guess My Number” on the hundreds chart. We are learning how to give good clues such as, “My number is even/odd, my number is greater than/less than, my number has a 5 in the ones place”, etc.

Science: We have started a unit on The Life Cycles of Animals and Plants. We will be discussing what a life cycle is and looking at the life cycles of butterflies, frogs, and grasshoppers. This unit will be followed by a unit on the water cycle and weather.

Spelling:
Week of 4/5/10: Unit 23: “oo” words
Week of 4/12/10: Unit 25: Words Writers Use
Week of  4/19/10: Unit 26: Vowel Diagraphs –ew, -ow
Week of 4/26/10: Unit 27: Color Words

Please continue to read with your child every night. You may want to read non-fiction books as well as storybooks and discuss the difference between them. Also, please practice counting money with your child as well as telling time. This can be done as part of your everyday routines such as going to the store or a discussion about what time we get ready for school, eat dinner, go to bed, etc. Your support at home will help your child “bloom into a third grader”.

The Month of January in Second Grade
Happy New Year!!  May 2010 bring you and your families much health, happiness, and love.  All the best to you. =)

This month in Second Grade we are working on the following concepts:

Reading: We are learning to retell a story using our 5 fingers.  The thumb stands for Characters, the pointer finger stands for Setting, the middle finger stands for Beginning/Problem in the story, the ring finger stands for Middle/Events in the story, and the pinkie finger stands for End/Solution of the story.  The palm of our hands represents the heart of the story/ what the story is really about.  Please use this 5-finger retell technique at home to reinforce this skill.

Writing: We are working on revising our Writer's Workshop stories to make our stories more readable to others.  We are also striving to use more "snap" words when we write and we are still aiming to write a small moment across several writing pages.

Math: We are currently working on several concepts including addition and subtraction word problems, money/counting to 50 cents, and counting by 2's, 5's and 10's using the hundreds chart.  Please continue to review addition facts at home.

Science: We are learning about ecosystems this month.  This unit involves such topics as seasons, habitats, endangered, extinct and food chains.

Spelling:  The Week of 1/18/10, Unit 14: Long e sound (ee, ea)
              The Week of 1/25/10, Unit 15: long i sound (y, i_e)

Please continue to read with your child at least 20 minutes per night.  This is an important component is raising your child's reading level.

September is HERE!

Welcome back to school!!  We have been quite busy since the first days of school.  In September, we learned about good citizenship and character development in Social Studies.  Currently in Social Studies we are learning about Geography.  We must know the following information:

The 7 Continents
The 4 Oceans
The 3 major rivers in the U.S.
The 2 major mountain ranges in the U.S.
Map skills (north, south, east, west, titles and legends)

In Math we have been working on Today's Number, number lines, money, counting and problem solving.  We work with some wonderful hands-on manipulatives during Math Workshop.  Some of our favorite math stations are Plus 1 or 2 Bingo, Collect 25 Cents, and making Number Strips.

We are always working on becoming better readers and writers in Language Arts.  In Reading, we have been working with nouns and verbs to create complete sentences.  We know that a sentence begins with a capital letter.  We also read our Morning Message everyday to find out what we will be learning that day in second grade.

In Spelling we have worked with short /a/ words and short /e/ words this month.

We use Writing Workshop to practice writing and to become better writers.  This month we have worked on quick sketches, stretching out words, and writing about our own lives.  We are working on writing stamina and also use Space Man to remind us to put spaces in between our words.

We have had a great and busy first month of school!!
